Corvallis 17 West Albany 14

Well, at least we don't have to hear too many people woofing around these parts. Corvallis High overcame a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to tie West Albany at 14. The winning field goal in the third time, was by Wade Penner, who'd already missed on two attempts earlier, and the last TD was on a 75 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Fred from Drew Hubel with less than three minutes to play, forcing the overtime. The game was played Saturday the ninth at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

It appeared that West was well in control of the game with the two touchdown lead at the end of the third, especially with its ball control offense that lead to two touchdowns in the third after a scoreless first half. West had possession for 9:30 seconds in that quarter and with Corvallis QB Hubel overthrowing his receivers most of the time, things didn't look too well for the Spartans.

Corvallis had first shot at the scoreboard on its first possession in the first half, but Wade Penner, who eventually kicked the winning field goal in the third overtime, missed from 26 yards. West drove down the field behind the running and passing of QB Jake Haberly, but he fumbled as he was hit going into the end zone at the one yard line, and the ball scooted out of the end zone for a touchback. West also had an interception return nullified by an early whistle; deep in its own territory at the end of the first quarter, Hubel threw a pass that was deflected off his receiver's foot, and was caught by a West player and retured 12 yards for the score, until the referees stepped in.

Fred also had the catch of the game, a 34 yard over the shoulder Willie Mays-type catch deep in Bulldog territory that set up the first field goal attempt.

After Corvallis tied the score at 14, West had 2:20, plus all three of its time outs, to go the 80 yards to try to set up some kind of winning score, but West coach Randy Nyquist played it safe and did not attempt to go down the field, it seemed that he had faith in his defense to hold the Spartans down in overtime.

From my view, West's Wayne Stearns was the player of the game, running hard all over the field on offense, defense, and special teams.
