Someone's Knocking At The Door, Better Let 'Em In: Long-Haired June Beetle Wants To Come In
Just another guest for our Fourth Of July family get together, this fellow spent most of the day on the front porch still as could be, finally leaving late in the afternoon. Yes, more proof that God must indeed be inordinately fond of beetles.

Don't Mess With Us: Bad Ass Bugs
Lists of things are usually a fun thing to peruse and debate, but CRACKED has one of its top 5 horrifying insects, the choices of theirs are kind of hard to argue with.
I've seen documentaries on a couple of their choices. Taboo, a series on National Geographic, in its Initiation episode, featured a segment on bullet ants, and the initiation ceremony that certain people in South America use for a coming-of-age trial. Which involves wearing a glove that has these stinging buggers woven into it, and must be worn for ten minutes at a time.
They've also shown an episode about the Japanese giant hornets and the damage they can inflict.
The other choices are linked below.

Bees Make Honey (And Do Other Beneficial Things)
A short article from the US News & World Report that outlines some of the things, besides honey, that bees pollinate, in relation to recent news reports on the disappearance of hives nationwide, and that affect on food prices.
UW NEWS
However, the national concern is apparently not shared with those who would know, as written about in an article earlier this week from the Eugene Register-Guard, with various postulations about the periodical disappearances of bees and their hives. After reading that article, I'm not quite ready to join the funeral wake for the humble bee just yet.

Stinging Red Ants Are Gunning For The Buddha

Oh the life of a stinging red ant is the life for me, especially if I was living in a Buddhist Temple in Malaysia, where resident monks are wondering what do with an invasion of the insects inside their residence, and where one person was bitten so badly that hospitalization was required. Of course Buddhists practice nonviolence, so the problem lies in how to get rid of them without harming or killing them. A quandry indeed. Well, one thing is for certain; the ants will soon be everywhere, they've started already with my bathroom at this moment. They'll be controlling our lives by giving us much-needed lessons on teamwork, as well as recognizing the greater good of the colony over the individual. It certainly couldn't be any worse than the political systems we have now, could it?

"Don't Try This At Home........One Way To Get Rid Of Bees"

Desperate situations usually call for desperate actions: I have no doubt that the homemade attempt of these Floridians to rid themselves from the unwanted attention of several thousand bees is not recommended by most professional exterminators, or of the local fire department.
I have no problems with the local bees making their honey, spending the rest of their time away from my yard out of my sight and my mind; a swarm like that in my backyard would certainly make me reconsider my options. It's those damn yellow jackets that instantly aggravate me, especially those sons-of-bitches that lived in the rotten stumps of the trees on the south side of my house.
The entire episode is posted for posterity below, first noticed via Digg.
